Hi

This is a question really aimed for David / ash and anyone else who has set forums up on webspace.  Is phpBB easy to set up?

I recall from Burf's site, that it is easy for spammers to create hoax users and hope that there is a solution to this problem.  Do you find that here?

Also is there a useful tutorial that anyone can recommend to get me started?

Hope you can help.

TIA

Deb

In a word, yes, but you'll want to at least do some modifications to stop spammers.

What sort of forum software are you looking for? Have you looked at BBpress (from Wordpress), pretty simple to setup and customise.

Debbie it depends on how many bells and whistles they want on the site. If you just start out simple they can do this themselves.

phpbb is not bad. This site uses that. I would not use the new version of the software yet. I think that is version 3. Version 2 is still being used and updated.

They have mods you can install that will help with the spammers. They also have ban mods built in that you just add a user name, user email address, ip address, etc.

With what I have seen you do, you could do this yourself and have it up in a day and than like Ash has said make a few fixes here and there to help even more with the spammers. You will never get rid of them but control them.

He got his degree and thats about the last I've heard.

I had to quit his forum to concentrate on my business.  Sounds bad but I have to look after #1.

You think?

Seriously relying on that you'll still get a tonne of spam on a popular forum.

For a small forum BBPress is the way to go! I set this one up in about 1hr, www.chancel.org.uk/forum

The free SMF forum  software is pretty good  Smiley
http://www.simplemachines.org/about/features.php

Also a bit more handy if you wish to plug bits of it into
parts of an existing site.

Its also a bit different to the main culprits in that the same
guy has been the lead developer for years ... and runs a tight
rein on coding and security.

Nice forum with features you need and no bloat.
