Man, Yahoo is messed up...I really hope they aren't done.

Ca anyone tell me why the heck Yahoo is displaying this screwed up description for my customers site?

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=satellite+equipment&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-501&pstart=1&b=31

http://www.thesatelliteshop.net/

The site is unchanged for 2 months, and gets crawled regularly.  It has proper desc and noydir and noopd tags as well, but this is not either one of those desc either.

No hidden text and is a straight html page, except the css menu I added.

They haven't even added any products in 2 months as we are working hard on something else.

I have been caring for this site for about 8 months and I wrote the new tags immediatly as they were badly stuffed, I would NEVER write a tag like that.

I think the results are displayed like that as it has searched the content of the page for the keywords and has added part of the page's content to the description.

Although saying that, if you just search the url then no description is displayed at all!? Or is it just the way i've done it?

Is'nt this just Yahoo (Google do the same) pulling what they consider to be the most relevant description for any given search term.

Google do it all the time.

its a combination of the meta description and the second big link in the main content's link text

Code:
<a href="/hypercart/PictureFrame.asp?Sku=40 dollar prepaid card plus receiver" class="featured">DISH NETWORK SATELLITE RECEIVER FOR PREPAID PROGRAMMING PLUS $40.00 PREPAID PROGRAMMING CARD</a>

see?

I assume yahoo thinks that link is relevant, like ash said.

Melanie

Ok I clicked on your search, but your site did not come up on that page. thesatelliteshop.net

I had to do a search for thesatelliteshop.net in order for it to come up.

The search was for satellite equipment....would my description not have been mor relevant?

Quote
Satellite Systems and equipment for Free to Air, Dish Network, and DIRECTV.  Equipment, tools and accesories for consumer home
C Band, XM and Sirius Radio systems.

So is Yahoo not going to use them?  I cannot get rid of those "caps" either...they are built into the cart.

Most site's descriptions are not displyed...this one is http:// www.sk yangel.com/Equipment/Index. asp?Reference=EIWelcome&~=

and this one http://www.sa telliteo ne.com/bigdis h/big dish.html

The good news is that both of his competitors have tanked too.  When I took over he was nowhere on Google, now he is #1...so I guess he can deal with a little Yahoo flux.

try changing the full stop in your meta description to a comma. It may be only pulling the first sentence from it and going elsewhere for the rest(Which imho is pants)

A little off topic here Melanie and I know it's only a small directory but stick a link for your clients site in the directory (under worldwide) of the first site in my Signature. Relevant to your clients topic.

There are tons of descriptions not displaying, not just mine.

Google displays it properly.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=satellite+equipment&btnG=Google+Search

The stop is the webmaster..pasting.  Actually is missing a word.... I will send him a note. But I believe it would be off the area of display anyhow.

Even Matt Cutts, he has no descritpion but if you search "seo blog" no description is displayed at all.  Many others too.

Maybe they are working the bugs out.

It was not there when I looked Darren. I looked for the site name and it was not listed so I did search for the site just to make sure I could see the discription. I have since gone back to and clicked on the link and it says it is listed at 31 spot now. At least it is coming up for me to look at.

Meet the new boss
        Same as the old boss...

Yahoo was crap, is crap, and will almost certainly always be crap. Over the past year they have made themselves irrelevant in the game of search.

From the sectors I keep track of. even #1 rankings in Yahoo don't generate as much traffic as #8-#10 rankings in Google.
