Yahoo Search Growth Beats Google
Yahoo's share of search traffic has grown faster than Google's in the last year, according to new data from Nielsen//Netratings.

Nielsen's October U.S. search share rankings show Yahoo with 1.46B searches, up 30% from last year and representing 23.9% of all U.S. searches. Google was used for 3.02B searches, up 23% from last year. Google is responsible for 49.6% of all Internet searches.

MSN/Windows Live Search fell 8% year-over-year. IAC InterActive Corp.'s Ask.com saw search traffic jump 25%, although the search engine only accounts for 2.8% of the market.

If you look at the data over the last three months (charts below), Yahoo and Google's share of searches follows the same pattern. MSN, meanwhile, has shown a steady decline in number of searches (slight bump in October), while both Ask.com and AOL report steady growth.

Has anyone else wondered why Microsoft has not spent billions of dollars in promoting their own search engine? It's not like they are hurting for cash.

Then again, maybe they are waiting for the release of Vista to start a media blitz for MSN Live.

SUNNYVALE, Calif., and REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 12, 2005 —Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: “MSFT”) today announced a landmark agreement to connect users of their consumer instant messaging (IM) services on a global basis. The industry’s first interoperability agreement between two distinct leading global consumer IM providers will give MSN® Messenger and Yahoo!® Messenger users the ability to interact with each other, forming what is expected to be the largest consumer IM community in the world, estimated to be more than 275 million strong.

Being able to instant message between IM communities is one of the features most requested by MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger users, and Microsoft and Yahoo! share a commitment to provide IM interoperability while keeping consumer security and privacy first and foremost. In addition to exchanging instant messages, consumers from both communities will be able to see their friends’ online presence, share select emoticons, and easily add new contacts from either service to their friends’ list, all as part of their free IM service.* Yahoo! and Microsoft plan to introduce these interconnectivity capabilities between MSN Messenger and Yahoo!
