...but WTF?

I put alot of my effort behind MSN and Google for particular reasons, but now, out of nowhere, I'm ranking number two for my main keyword, number three for my secondary keyword, and these results just keep climbing.  I don't get it.

I've heard that Yahoo just looooveeesss links, but I have just never been able to crack the Yahoo SERP scheme.  Just don't know.  Never been in a discussion about it and never read read a tut on it.

But now.

Outdoor Furniture Cushions #2
Patio Furniture Cushions #3

Just last week, I was placing maybe 3rd page on Yahoo for each of these, now I'm in my favorite spot. (I normally don't neccesarily want 1st, I've got a theory that 3rd, 4th, and 5th might get better click through)

Can anybody tell me how the heck I did this?

Here's an advance bit of info...(we're going to do an audio tutorial on the blog next week about this)

Brian Mark, who's a speaker at SES & also a contributing author on my blog, just found a Great bit of info at the SES San Jose... Apparently being W3C validated is now indexing at an extremely HIGH %

Last week some tests were run and 12,000+ new pages were indexed... something to look into Wink

Yeah, but...

Neither one of these pages come close to validating.  I'm not a big follower of the validation vs serp scenario, because I have yet to see one example where a valid xhtml webpage out performed in the SERPs a regular, although error (as far a W3C goes) filled website.

There have been a few tests, but validation requirements for a webpage to get higher listing on a SERP doesn't seem very realistic.  I've posted about this before, although if Yahoo wants to do it, well, I guess so.

The SE's are not code police, they are search providers, their business is search results, and I don't see how they would be pushed one way or the other based on W3C standards.

I've heard the argument that W3C validated pages are easier to crawl, faster to load, etc. however, I don't see the bots having a lot of problem crawling, really anything on the web.  The bots crawl weirdo IBM .do files, javascript, PDF and Word Docs, Text files, php and asp.net included content, code behind (yeap, I have found references to code behind pages,) style sheets, you name it, the bots have an inate talent to crawl them.

But back to my question, can someone tell me why I'm showing up better in Yahoo?

Is it my sigs in this and other forums?

Normally Yahoo is a great one for fresh conent and links, just lately I've noticed that sites who advertise with MIVA and their associated Directories are showing up well. I always maintain that if you optimise primarily for Google then the other SE's will eventually follow suit.
The question here is, are you getting business from it?

Right I didn't say you were getting ranked higer because of validation reasons... BUT if your pages link together... then this would help greatly ie:
if you only have 30 of your 300 pages indexed... then you really only show 30 backlinks per SE Wink so if you get them all done up quickly w/ the Tidy extension for firefox (which I suggest, and need to do myself)  then you would in theory have 300 backlinks because all 300 pages would be indexed Wink (I'm using made up numbers here I have no idea how many pages you have...

And to figure out why your ranking for those peticular terms... it could have to do with your sigs at different forums... Wink I have well over 3k+ posts at various forums and they make my sites pop to the top Wink

food for thought

Yeah, I took part of the Yahoo Site Explorer thingamabobber.  I'm trying to learn a little more about Yahoo because I've put all of my SEO efforts behind Google, and I'm not paying attention to where I'm getting about 30% of my traffic.

I get this:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=linkdomain:cushionsandumbrellas.com%20-site:cushionsandumbrellas.com
and Site Explorer has me listed with 237 links and 189 pages.

Yeah, I am.  Not that I'm complaining.  Remember when you and I had that discussion about links and needing help.  Well, no one was really in the position, but again, thanks for all your help.  I guess it's showing up in Yahoo after a few months.

Now I've got to get this kind of listing at Google, and I'll be one happy camper, and BUSY!

Looks like Yahoo doesn't pay attention to no-follow links.  Either that, or Matt Cutts has them turned off.

Well it appears that most of Yahoo's results are based on the cost of PPC ads via MIVA.
So I for one are no longer recommending paying for Directory submission to Yahoo. It is taking the piss out of natural search results.

Never did submit to the Yahoo directory.  Like most of the BIG directories, other than having the high PR link, you don't really need it to be "included" in SERP's.

But it seems that Yahoo! doesn't pay attention to the rel=nofollow tag in blogs or forums.  They like em just fine.
