btw david, how do you keep track of all your alerts? right now i have 40 odd folders set up in outlook and a tonne of filters in place to filter the alerts into the various folders.  Its kind of unworkable if i did this with all my domains(around 30).

So if I understand this correctly you let the alert tell you who has written about something and then you comment on it?

No - not just that - there's far more to it than just that.  If you have an un indexed page on your website - set up an alert for it and it is guaranteed to get crawled. With the free version just keep changing the keywords or pages.  With mine I have every topic under the sun on alerts. If I see a really good directory being suggested I link there.  It's all about 'relative' searches.

Sure - OK www.google.com/alerts -  Log yourself in and then set as many free enquiries as they let you have these days. Because I do so many I have the premium account and have to pay google Cry  but the poor sods need the money Grin

Key in your keywords or anchor text and your own URL.  Then make sure you do blogs as well

example  Blogs about 'historic novels' the ' ' ensures anchor text
example  Websites about 'historic novels'

Here's how I actually set mine out
http://newhistoricalfictionbooks.blogspot.com/ Comprehensive once a day edit
 http://www.openmarkethomebuy.org.uk Comprehensive as-it-happens edit
Key Worker Mortgages Comprehensive once a day edit
Key Worker Mortgages Blogs once a day edit
New UK Books Blogs Comprehensive once a day edit
Open Market Homebuy Comprehensive once a day edit
Open Market Homebuy Blogs Comprehensive once a day edit
 openmarkethomebuy websites

Every single day I get an email from Google listing the results. I follow their links by doing a simple "theirsite" and if I see an opportunity to link there I will.  I was actually the first guy to use this, but now I get copied all over Cool It's simple but it works.

Im a bit confused while reading it sir.. Especially about the alerts and the comprehensive edit in the URL.. I mean, why do I have to keep on editing the URL?

I've been a long time away from this forum so excuse me for getting back in with what is probably an exceedingly dumb question...

I followed David's Google Alerts' example and entered a number of key phrases that I'm interested in and lo and behold, results aplenty today.

However, why, for the key words "regimental numbers" would Google alert me to a post on a forum which was made six years ago?  Is there any way of getting relevant, current alerts?

There, told you it was a dumb question.

Paul

Welcome home Paul - I trust you are well.  Yeah, it will bring up old searches, that's because you are sort of hiring the googlebots to do some free work for you.  And the little buggers dig deep. It's really a case of trial and error. Cool  I suppose you could try a simple -'results for 2008' in the search term.
