With the (hopeful) death of Page Rank (stop it David !) rumour spreading around the web I thought it was time to tackle that sticky problem of what will happen to Directories when or rather if the PR was removed from the tool bar given that most Directories rely on the little green bar for their money and traffic
So in spirit I'm a directory owner get me out of here

Those of you who own directories what are you planning indeed are you planning?

I'm posting that blog link in Warriors - that'll sort the little buggers out!!!

The Yanks (Not all - just Warriors) are obsessed by toolbar and Alexa - yippee - good post Tim.

To answer the question - no idea -how much can a Directory earn??

I run 6 and my monthly income from them is just under a $1000 dollars
however I am or in the process of selling 4 of them. Keeping the one good earner and a spare that I have plans for.

I've got 4 directories now, having just purchased another one today

Death of directories? Only for the ones who rely on PR, directories that can adapt evolved and provide value for their customers will survive.

I really don’t think that toolbar PR is going away.  Not unless google can come up with another gimmick.  Google makes too much money on it.  Once a quarter millions of people (bloggers, directory owners, site owners, ect…) stay glued to their little green bar waiting to see if they got a jump.  Just the word of mouth advertising during PR update season is enormous.

There is a mini economy that revolves around the toolbar PR and google is at the center of it.  They would be shooting themselves in the foot to do away with it.

without getting into the whole PR debate I think the biggest reason is they have to support it and its become a bit of a albatross round their necks. Also its the biggest metric for paid links, which is of course something they have recently come out as being anti.

Saves me rewriting it, that was my answer to one of the comments left of the article who asked why would they.

But I nor any one else said they would simply that a Google employees have been asking what would you replace it with, the article by the way is not really about PR its just the bit everyone   (David) picked up on.

My one directory is free, so no worries...People will pay for backlinks that are not being devalued....and for any directories that are, by freak accident providing traffic.

The directory on the new site will be paid, but it will be a local business directory for businesses that might not even have web sites....So no worries here.

I do think PR is going away though....the update completion has been "coming" for weeks.  It can go away, I am no fan, show me the money...that's where the results are.

A lot of PageRank die hards will cry like babies!!!

My biggest earning site is a directory and i've only been ask once about the PR and once about if I can change the anchor text from www.bla to keywords..

If the site is niche enough then its target is not SEO but site owners.. Most site owners haven't got a clue about PR and only care about traffic..

I've always made quite a bit of money from my directories.  I also un-installed the Google Toolbar two years ago.  Co-incidence?  I think not Smiley

It is lucky you do not think to often human for it will make your head explode. While your primitive minds are unlikely to grasp true understanding of Chaos theory to use your own analogy it is butterflies flapping their wings not Google toolbars.
