About 4 years ago I created a project called LinkGrotto.com.  I have just been holding onto the url because I kind of like the name.  That said I have been thinking about starting a directory.  The linkgrotto has a PR2 and I know I could get it back to a PR3 pretty easily.

Is starting a directory worth the effort?
Should it be a deep link directory, Main page only, or both?
Which software would you use?

I like and use PHPLD www.phplinkdirectory.com

I use the free version for my webmaster directory and the paid version for my UK website directory.

I keep meaning to launch a couple of 'free' directories on some old domains i have kicking around to boost my own backlinks. Of course managing 100's of submissions can be tricky.

I found my directory (sumpy.com)  very worthwhile.

I have not been overwhelmed with submissions,  (not with sensible ones anyway).  I usually make around one new entry per day, and I am gradually listing my own pages.

I will probably use it as  navigation for my other sites at some time in the future, and it currently serves as a links page. For the limited amount of time I spend there I am very happy with the results.

Yes, I think a directory is good addition.

Ash,

Do you have an old copy of the free version?  I don't see where it is offered anymore.  Does it use paypal?  Do you think it is worth paying the $75 not to have the phplinkdirectory copyright at the bottom?  How long does it take to setup?

Free version is on the left side of the page. Version 2. Paid version is version 3

You can pay I think 25 for version 3 but you have to keep there link on the bottom of the page or you can pay the 75 and no link to them.

Thanks yourweb.  I found it and installed it.  Does anyone know if there is a way of importing categories or do I have to do all that manually?

If you dig around the forum over there you can find some categoy 'dumps' you can then import them in MYSQL for version 2 or in the backend of version 3.

Verison 3 has alot more features and in my opinion the option without the link is preferable, but perhaps you could start with the $25 version and then ugrade at a later date.

Thanks for your help everyone.  Ash thanks for the dump tip.  I went through and made all the urls more seo friendly.  I would say it took me about 6 hours to get the directory up and running.

I really don't like the style I gave the directory, but it will work for now.  I will clean it up as I go along.  I just adapted my old style for the link grotto for the  directory.  I will do a post tomorrow... well when I wake up in a few hours to get y'all to submit some links.

Great!  Thanks for doing that.  How did the emails look?  One thing I can already say that I dislike about the directory software is that it is extremely difficult to try and find the page that was submitted to.  I guess if I did not have over 3000 categories it would be a bit easier.
