I've looked through the forum for a previous post on this subject but can't find the answer I'm after.

What is the general consensus on the use of sumbitting articles as a way of creating relevant links?

Would one sumbit the same article over and over to different article directories without re-writing it, or would this constitute duplicate content?

To me it would seem wise to at least alter the anchor text of the link(s) we embed, and probably only include one or two anchor text links in the article.

Are they worth the time and what experiences have people had from this?

When you submit your article to a directory it should have your info in it. So submitting the same thing to another directory would be done in the same way. Don't change a thing. Changing the article would mean that it is a different work. This is not the same as having the same content on your site. You change each page on your site for a reason. Just like you submit your works to other sites for a reason. Not the same thing.

I think you might be wise to change anchor texts but that is time consuming.

I'd probably look to write about 10 articles and submit them all (identically!) to as many article directories that i could find!

I'll give it a go with a few articles to start with. Try and find less competitive long key phrases as the anchor link texts. One article will be sumbitted with identical anchor links to the article directories. The other articles will have different anchor texts for each submission.

Then I'll monitor searches on the keyphrases and see which, if any, makes a difference.

Quick update.

Wrote a 500 word article, put it on my site.

Edited it to 310 words (with 2 embedded links). Only submitted to ONE article site, and one digg.

Submitted and uploaded both 47 hours ago.

14 download requests, republished on at least one other site, a technorati authority link and 4 diggs later:

The article on my site shows up at 2/783,000 for one keyphrase and 4/945,000 for another phrase in google, and another at around 104/4,490,000.

I have to say article submissions show promise. Though I've got to see if the Diggs may have affected this. Next time i won't Digg, but submit to the same directory.

I was a newbie back then Dave!... Have learnt a lot fast (I think).

It was actually a pretty good move I suppose, and maybe better than what I'm doing now. I think I only ever submitted the one article in the end.

The article submitted was rewritten by myself, cutting 200 words out, and was unique to the original.

The article at ezinearticles no longer ranks, but today the post on the blog ranks no5 in UK Google for the 3 word targetted phrase from 2,370,000 potential results and has stuck there for the best part of a year - behind articles from bbc.co.uk, cnet.com & pcmag.co.uk. The phrase probably brings a handful of similar searches a week, so is by no means a biggie.

I haven't done as much to that site in the last 6 months as I should have, as I've been concentrating on a different site. I left it ranking no3 for the term "digital tv" which has now slipped to second page.

I think I ought to do more with it because your reply, as well as recent comments from the reps on Setanta and Sky affiliate programmes has prompted me to check what it ranks for now and I don't think it'll require much to bring it up to date.
