hi all

wondered if anyone has used google alerts to see what their competitors are up to. for example i could look for linking opportunities by setting an alert for the sites that rank above mine then trying to get a link also.
is this a bit underhand or common practice?

Hi Pestek,

You could use Google Alerts to notify you when your competition is listed on any sites or blogs, but similarly you might be better off checking your competitors backlinks and just work your way through some of them.

Kind regards,
Tony

Doesn't matter either way. Each site/link will be judged on it's own merits regardless of cms/platform; apart from some old and dead bbs/guestbooks that haven't seen life in years apart from the usual viagra links.

Here's how it works - I had an alert in this morning and this was the link - I then add comment in the blog and they use my forum username and my URL that should create another link based on topic/ anchor text/ keywords

also getting alerts about other local pest controllers usually from directories they have been added to. so i ad my link  to the same directory.

Google alerts are also great for 2 other uses:

1. Set up an alert on your name and/or business or product name to keep an eye on what people are saying about you.

2. Set up alerts on your primary keywords in Blogsearch and you'll get daily inspiration for your blog posts and articles!
