Hello fellow forumites,
I am kinda confuse on how google alterts works and I will like some one here to explain to me better. I sign up for a google alert account some weeks back with all of my keywords put in the tags but I get my own site sent to me mostly all the time which is confusing me right now. I was actually told google altert is meant for links exchange but why does google keep sending me my own url?

Are you entering the keywords one at a time? As in one keyword per alert?

I bet you've hit the preverbial nail on the head - I have the pay for version so I have virtually unlimited numbers of searches - but the freebie is more restricted.  You have a sharp mind Matt.

Paid for service Huh? I didnt even know there was one?!

Been using them this morning actually. Getting some great links and like you said David, if google found them then theyre are obviously highly relevant. It makes me think that google hasnt quite mastered semantics though coz sometimes you get a link which is completely off target.

Yup it's called Premium Google Alerts - $30 a quarter or half yearly - I don't really check it, it's hooked into my paypal account.  I figured that if I'm contributing to the Google cause I'd get some kick back Grin Grin Grin

So what are the benefits of going for the premium service? Might be worth looking into!

They are listed in the link - I went out and found the link and added it later - it's just above your post.

That looks like it's worth signing up to.

I only use the free edition where it sends an email when specified, but the premium has a lot more features.

I like the idea of rss feeds of your alerts  Wink (which I can't see on the standard alerts)

Yeah, looks good. Would be good to have it organised in such a way. If i let it slip for a week or two then i end up with masses of alerts to trawl thru!
@daniboy. the rss feature is a top idea!

Theyre not affiliated with google though. I wonder what the setup is?

what I did was to put the keywords in one single alert. Do I need to make different alerts?

thanks for the great information but what effect does it have on my page rank. How do I use the alerts and why was google sending me my own site initially.

Hi Yommys01,

Google Alerts have no effect on PR.
Search and read some of the posts on this forum that detail how to use Google Alerts ...
You shall soon find the enlightenment you are seeking for.... Cool

Did you update your site with relevant posts after adding alerts for the keywords or even the title of your site?

Hi Mods - Perhaps we need a sticky on GAs.

Kind regards,
Tony
