Hi guys, I'm just preparing a brief for a possible client and they run Actinic catalog E-commerce software, I have come across it before, the version they are using is a very old variant (at least I hope so from the markup!) has any one used the software does it have any saving graces?

Another place you might ask at is TotalWebTalk
They have users there that do all kinds of things.

Given their resistance to move its irrelevant, I find it hard to understand why people pay £400 + support costs for a perl script... It has no killer feature, and doesn't tie into their systems in any way. But hey some you win some you lose Smiley

I've had loads of experience with actinic, which version is your client planning on using?

it doesn't have any killer features when put next to any half decent OScommerce store (my experience is of versions 4 - 7).  People like because it's supposedly very easy to set up your store and get trading (but probably no easier than any half decent os commerce blah blah).

the downsides of actinic is seemingly endless variations on their very bland templates, if one wants an actinic store that looks nice, they'll need to find somebody who specialises in custom templates for actinic, which adds to the cost of running the thing.

there are plenty of plugins available for it from www.mole-end.biz and whatever site a bloke called Norman Rouxel has.

The Actinic community is pretty good for tips and trouble shooting, but they're slow to respond (especially the older versions).

did you say a £400 price tag?  the latest version 8 is £399 + vat and you could get them down to £350 if you ask nicely or go to a reseller.

They are using v7 already, they did seem to be planning on upgrading to v8 but that wasn't discussed, from my point of view the use of software isn't as much of an issue, but it would seem a lot of the html is hard coded, this could prove to be more problematical if I end up working with them Smiley

aye.  from a developer point of view it's a pain in the arse (until one gets to know it).

If i had the money I'd buy the developer because there's a lot of work available in custom actinic templates and providing actinic support, however, it's over a year since I've worked with Actinic based sites so the learning curve i went through 3 years ago would start all over again (not a fun prospect in the short term).

it's not bad once you get know it.

I'm an Actinic partner and have been using Actinic since the early days.

We currently use Actinic V8 multi site on a daily basis.

I have several clients site sitting at number one positions for chosen keywords using Actinic, so, for an optimisation point of view it does the business. Several sites I run are processing over 100 orders a day and I'm totally confident in the software and ordering process.

I have experience in OScommerce and most other ecommerce packages .  There are plus and minuses for each but I feel for business applications, Actinic suits our company and clients needs.

I agree the template system in Actinic can be tricky but with a little css knowledge you can provide stunning desings.

Hope this helps.

thanks Webnauts as detailed in the above post it was about that specific software as thats what the clients had (and they had no plans to change) Even though its clunky I still tend to use os commerce myself.

not tried actinic, i'm a freebie kinda guy when it comes to web apps as its a case of either i'll use something someone else is giving me for free or i'll code it myself.  too tight i guess. The 2 shops i've had experience with are both php based and are oscommerce and cubecart respectively.  Cubecarts my favorite at the moment until i actually do code my own cart.  I did promise myself a couple of years ago i'd code something but life keeps getting in the way.  For now though cubecart does the job for me, although i do get semi-regular oscommerce mod requests.  Shame the people that want the mods are trying to pay me in milk tokens and beer bottle caps.
