I was thinking a simple way to add something thats different to the forum would be a Q/A section, so new members (even experienced ones) and experienced members answer them, similar to yahoo answers.

To help fund this, the answers can be either public or private where the user pays a nominal amount $5 to have the answered in private so only the members answering and the questioner see it.

otherwise the free one joe public (search engines) etc see it.

I know this model is working on SEOMoz but only for premium members and while I have a lot of respect for Rand and co quite a lot of their answers are pretty lame.

I see Tim, so a few select experienced members answer the questions.

Sounds like a good idea, do you know of any ready made scripts for such a thing or a mod for PHPBB?

I am sure there is some type of mod made for this. Does the site have any plans to update to the new version of the software? If so this might be done first before any more mods are installed.

Nothing that really jumped out the only one I know of is http://www.symfony-project.com/askeet

but I'm sure on of our PHP coders could do a phpbb mod,

the complicated bit would be making questions public/private

We might upgrade but i'm not keen on upgrading the whole forum until a stable version of PHPBB3 is released...
