I'm not sure how you have the member list set up (ie "no index" "no Follow") but it might be a consideration to remove the email column to protect members from potential harveters and the www column so spammers get no benefit.

Dave

I wanted to follow up on this. Take a look at this link...

http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:mySCszknobgJ:davidcastle.org/BB/memberlist.php+&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1

As long as the member list is allowed to be indexed and shows the websites of the members it's going to be a giant spammer magnet. Spammers need not make a single post to get a link.

Hmmm... I wonder if that's why I suddenly started receiving a bunch of spam in my inbox over the past month or so. I'm usually very careful at protecting that email address.

Most likely. There are some out there now that are very clever in pulling words from forum posts for the subject matter.

David... It's precisely why.

I'm working with vbulletin now but if I remember the backend of phpBB correctly, you can set the fields displayed on the member list rather easily.

Removing the email and www fields will help a bunch.

I've not tried to register recently, but setting registration to "user activated" forcing new members to retrieve an email to activate their account goes a long way to prevent spammers.

The forum is set for user confirmation already.

I thought PHPBB had an option to obscure users email addresses too, but i can't find it on this forum, possibly because we are not running the latest version of the software.

I might do a quick robots text exclude for the members page so those links don't count.

I've excluded the members list using robots.txt.

I've also set the board to send emails to the users via the forum, so you can no longer see users email addresses you have to email them through the forum.

Hopefully this is sorted now then.

Can't think what the problem would be, other than a temporary problem with his ISP.

If you could ask him to email at mysiteonline.co.uk address i'll see if i can help.
