Those of us that have been seeing some pretty rough 'in fighting' over at The Other Place, where a Moderator was attacked for what was conceived as a lack of SEO knowledge, I ask this question. Should a forum be allowed to become more liberal in what gets posted and moderated, and shall we allow more Warriors type posts where SEO tools are commonly allowed to be promoted to fellow members?

Which one?  Green grass springs to mind?

It does get a bit heated on there sometimes.  Never knew that you could have such a heated debate on SEO!!

A bit of liberation is OK, so long as you're not so opinionated that you don't allow others to have their say.

Also you have to be careful ref the language barrier: I remember not all that long ago having a thread unstickied in the other place because of referring to a certain liquid substance that has the same nickname in America as a certain solid substance.

As far as allowing tools to be promoted to fellow members, a slippery slope when it can be considered self promotion. When the Mod hat is on, I try and read posts with the following question in mind...

Who is this post designed to benefit?

There's been quite a few "squabbles" of late an another forum. Many have been a matter of someone poking a stick in a hornets nest and rattling it around just to see what would happen. Others simply over being petty.

My biggest concern isn't so much of a lack of moderation but over poor moderating. One in particular comes to mind who has developed some really bad habits. You don't have to have a great deal of knowledge about a subject, or try and prove that you do, to be a good mod.

Couldn't agree more!  Cheesy

Dave, I know who you mean and he does not post here anymore. But the whole thing is geting a little bit out of hand over there. MrLeN for example has gone stark staring bonkers, but if you want a laugh try this www.webprowombats.com  he's doing all the postings himself. But it's bringing the forum into disrepute - ok I had a go at him, but in an e-mail and PM - NOT in open forum.

Which is why I have just cleaned this place up, I want it to expand.

I'm of two minds on the subject.. First, I like a go throw down just like anyone else, but I think that in a professional setting it simply isn't appropriate.. I find it even less appropriate when people are allowed to go on and on simply to increase post count and cause trouble while at the same time providng no real positive influence..

As long as strangeness is kept in specific areas I have no problem with it.. In fact I encourage it.. But in primary forums where people are asking serious questions it's simply not appropriate and needs to be moderated first with requests to remain on topic, second with demands to remain on topic, third with physical harm..

But I agree with Dave, while absolute knowledge of a subject is not required for moderation, it does give the implication of knowledge so it needs to be handed out with care..

I'd hate Tip to descend into an orgy of self promotion - any other orgies acceptable btw Wink

Respectful self promotion a la burf style I've no problem with one iota, but there was a post by a newbie a few weeks back that I seem to remember CTABUK stepping on pretty swiftly, as it was obviously nothing more than pure self promo - I liked that Smiley

I'm all for an area where we can post offers of services or work, but I think that exists already doesn't it?

At my SEO forum I've decided to let everything go as long as it's ontopic.  Maybe a drive-by spam post will get chunked to the Spam forum if it is on the lame side.  So far it's been fine.  Never had a bitchfest there. SEO doesn't get hit by the same crowd that spams finanical sites like no tomorrow, so that's nice.  And it's not an emotional topic like religion or politics, thankfully.
