I loved school - we had goats and chickens (we had to kill the chickens at Christmas and sold them in the village - dozens of 14 year olds either strangling or head chopping chickens - wow, it would not be allowed today) we had the Thames nearby so we had canooing, cricket with nets and all the gear. Tennis Courts, running track, the school was not academic - it was a rural hideaway and was run pretty much along the lines of St Trinnians - I loved it.

I grew up on a farm and had to strangle 100+ turkeys every xmas. I had to pop them head first into an upside down funnel thing and clip their heads straight off! Didnt think twice about it when i was wee! Ive lived in cities since i was about 18 and probably wouldnt be able to do it with the same care free manner now!

You pass the class if you can hand it in with your name on it some place.

Standards of education were extremely high years ago when
teachers could batter, torture, humiliate and imprison pupils
before getting around to relieving their sexual proclivities.

Even worse, you had to eat the dinners ...whatever they were.
Gitmo Bay is a holiday camp compared to real DETENTION  Shocked

Plus, of course there was that inconceivable today mechanism
for controlling youth crime known as compulsory HOMEWORK and
a compulsory clearly identifiable School Uniform.

There were no disruptive pupils with ADS or any other made-up
Syndrome .... trouble-makers were sent to an Approved School
or Borstal where a culture of ruthless post-war military discipline
was applied by psychopathic staff  Shocked

Young folks today don't know what they missed  Grin

LOL, that often was the progression after Borstal.

National Service was a fact of life ...and sorted out loads of toerags
and turned them into fairly normal human beings. I knew loads of friend's
older brothers who were called up during the Korean War ...got through
OK and thought that was it .... and why not sign up for some nice free
beermoney as a reservist. Then along came Suez and screwed things up.

This BEEB article tells it how it was pretty much at the time

Dunno about armed National Service these days, but this might be good  Cool
