Although XP Pro has been good to me the past few years, I'm considering upgrading to Vista Home Premium. After all, if I want the latest software I won't be able to hold on to XP forever.

So, if you're using Vista, what do you think of it? Have you had any performance issues? Has the system been stable? What are the things you like about it? What things do you hate? Does Vista start to bog down after a while the way that XP does?

If you upgraded from XP to Vista, did you go the upgrade route or clean install? I'm particularly interested in those that chose the upgrade option. I assume that if you choose the clean install you need to re-install all of your programs. I would hate to have to re-install everything again.

My wife recently bought a laptop that came loaded with Vista. So far she likes it, but she's not exactly a power user, so I can't draw too many conclusions from her experience.

The main reason that I'm coinsidering an upgrade now is that I can't get SP3 to install completely. Since that aborted SP3 install I've had some lockup problems and that gets frustrating after a while. Even after disabling Norton Internet Security I keep getting "Access Denied" messages when I try to install SP3 and I have not been able to trace the error. Of course, it seems stupid that Microsoft does not create a log file that lets you know where the error occured.

I've got vista at work, much to my annoyance really. It looks good but if, like me, smooth swooshing windows and fancy 3D navigation isnt an issue then that makes no difference.

Problems so far include:
Had to reinstall Office twice before i get Word to open in anything other than safe mode.
It asks you those type of "are you sure" questions ALL the time, even with regards to Microsoft's own software.
I get little glitches where the curser does what you asked it to but about 30 seconds later (e.g. when typing).
Windows explorer is weird! Its just not as easy to navigate around windows and move files, like sometimes all you want to do is go up a couple of levels but there is NO up button? Strange.
Periodically Dreamweaver wont open and i have to re-boot the machine.

Positives:
It starts quick!
It looks like something out of the future!

Of course, any problems that I'm having may be due to other factors and I also dont really "use" windows extensively. I also know sod all about OS! So im probably not the best person to talk to but from a grass roots level i prefer xp.

That annoying feature called UAC (user account control) where it asks you 'are you sure' all the time can be switched off. Go into the control panel, choose user accounts, select your username, then enable/disable user account control.

I also cannot stand the windows explorer, it seems to have taken a big step back in functionality. It seems like the operating system is catered more for home users that want to play media files rather than anyone who wants to use it for work. Hence the glitsy user interface and rip-offs from apple products.

I agree, feels like MS have targeted the home market more than anything.

I keep on hearing that a lot of users don't care for it. You have to turn to many things off before it will work half way right. We have it on our laptop, I don't care for it but my son likes it. Sometimes it is slow.

I keep on hearing that a lot of users don't care for it.

That's why I posed this question. There's a lot of hearsay that Vista is a dud, but most of that seems to be coming from the anti-Microsoft crowd and not actual users of the product.

There were some earlier comments that Microsoft had geared Vista to the generic home PC user. I think that is absolutely true with the Vista Home version. But there are also Vista Business and Vista Ultimate editions that look to be geared towards the power user. But those versions come at a higher cost. Between the additional cost and the fact that most new PC's do not come loaded with the advanced versions I think that is where some power users miss out on what Vista can offer.

As far as some of the eye candy on Vista goes, I could care less about that crap. I just wan't a stable system that runs quick and won't bog down like XP does after a few months. Although my XP Pro has been stable, when it has problems - especially registry problems - it can be a real pain in the ass.

My system is a custom built 3.2GHz Core2 Duo with a rockin' D975 Intel motherboard and 8 GB of RAM, so I know it can handle Vista with ease. I just worry about the reliability of Vista in the long run.

Yeah - I have Norton. I hate it. I don't even know why I have it on here. When my subscription runs out I'm going to look for something else.

There was an article about vista and big buiness. This was some time ago. But it basically said, until big buiness starts to use vista, it is not worth getting.

Norton is shite. Some folks near me were having loads of probs with it,
so I told them to get rid and try Avast instead. After all kinds of issues,
the fact is that to uninstall Norton you either have to try and do it in
SAFE MODE and/or get an uninstall utility from Norton's site ...hmmmm :Smiley

XP SP3 seems to give some people problems on AMD systems. There
are fixes etc on Microsoft and elsewhere.

Vistaaaaargh is crap imho ... tried it ....hate it. My son loves it, but
ended up buying another HD to run/dualboot XP on because Vista
still does not run half the stuff he uses. Microsoft is actively developing
the successor to Vista in the hope that business and retailers will like
that when it comes. Meanwhile XP's product life and support has been
extended past its original planned sellby date.

A couple of things really annoy me with Vista.
The horizontal navigation ....if you are drilling DOWN to some file, then
going sideways is not intuitive.
The dumbing down of stuff like defrag ....grrrrrrr.

Regular housekeeping keeps XP running fine .... disk cleanup, defrag,
and registry and crap cleanup with CCleaner works wonders  Grin

Do you hate it because after 4 or 5 years you're comfortable with XP and there are new ways of doing things in Vista? Or do you hate it because Vista is unstable?

From the comments I have read here and elsewhere, most people hate Vista because it's different. I remember some of the same comments every time we get a new Windows OS. And most of the tech problems seem to be from underpowered systems or people trying to run old hardware or old software.

If I was designing my own OS I certainly would forget about trying to make it work with every bit of old hardware and software. Because of all of the labor and testing involved that wouldn't be profitable. Sure, it's a pain (and costly) for some users. But they probably should have upgraded long ago. I ran the Vista compatibility test the other day and the only issues it pointed out were an aged network card and an old piece of software that  I haven't used in two years.

For me, the most important points about an OS are long term stability followed by overall security. Usability is important as well. But there have been many times when I purchased the latest version of a widget and got frustrated because something changed with it, But after working with it a while I realized that the change was for the better. I'm hoping it will be that way with Vista.

I still haven't made the switch, but I will after I finish up this big project that I am working on.

New is not always better .....
If it works, why fix it.

Now most people have more than enough personal computing
power to run a space mission, the only reason for upgrading
is corporate revenues and profits to keep the global industry
afloat.

With an adequate broadband connection, most people can do
most family. school, college, work and lieisure activities online
with quite modest even elderly technology. Rubbish games
and other content/ media are still rubbish in HD. I note that
the price of BlueRay capable laptops and desktops seems to
have dropped by 50% since the start of this year. In these
troubled economic times, people have more essential things to
spend their money on ... like mortgages, food, fuel, clothing ...
rather than Vistaaargh and a not much faster computer.

Lol, one of these days I will just click "install" one one of
my Linux Live CDs and be gone from M$ forever  Shocked
