Well hello all, thought I would give you all an update.

Burf.com is now sitting around 7 million pages indexed and I am increasing hardware to cater for more

I have added a web proxy (http://www.burf.com/proxy/) to the site which is hugely busy!

I added a dmoz directory as a tester to the site to see if the pages would get indexed and well it seems to of not got indexed lol

I added better caching to the site to speed up searches

I am going to be adding a ffa to the site as another tester!

I have also built up my site network to nearly 80 sites which will all be sorted out and linked

Burf.com also became a PR6 (woho)

Future
I am going to spend the next month or so improving the searching some more as its still pretty poor!

Any suggestions or help please let me know!

Burf.com is a PR6 and has been for a few months.  I have a nice host who looks after my needs and one of the servers is based at my house on a limited pipe

Traffic, well this month is up over 3,000,000 page views lol

So you write your own search routine. Is this hard?

Except for the db to store the data and give a basic results set back, the search engine is completely written by me

Erm yes, it can be quite hard to work out how to rate page a vs page b, but one day I get there!

Burf, if you don't mind me asking how much does it cost you to setup and maintain Burf.com and associated sites.

I really should support Burf and set it as my homepage for searches!

Let me make it work better before you start supporting it lol

The costs are very minimal.  I believe around £60pm hosting, £20pm for power (my place).  I own around 90 sites so, domain renewals are quite often.  All I can think of at the moment, it does pay for itself.  Its quite cheap to run based on the way I have designed it.  Probably is it is not that scaleable

Oh cost of hardware comes up to and I spend about £300-400 maybe a year lol

Burf rank is down to the places it finds the word in the page

E.g if you search for the word christmas.  A site where the word is found in the url, title and page will be rated higher than a site that contains just the word in the body
